Introducing our new 100% organic range, Abuelico

This project was headed up by DO Yecla’s very own Paco Santa Disla. It had always been a dream of his to introduce the wonderful wines of Yecla to the Boutinot portfolio. Working alongside our head winemaker, Eric Monnin, Abuelico was born.

In Yecla, the fruit of the dandelion clock is commonly known as Abuelico, deriving from the world Abuelo, meaning grandfather in Spanish. This is a nod to both the white hair of grandfather’s and the distinctive white plumes.

Dandelions are common small wildflower characterised by their golden yellow petals, which bloom in early spring. Throughout the year these petals transform into fluffy white plumes, known as ‘clocks’.

As the blooms of the dandelion clock are blown around the vineyards, the ‘Abeulico’ cite a sense of lightness and tranquility at the end of summer, but also exemplifies the start of a new grape harvest.

The label also show our very first QR code with the full story of Abuelico, along with photos and wine information.

DO Yecla

…located in South-Eastern Spain, is one of the smallest appellations, consisting of only 6000 hectres.

The grapes for Abuelico are sourced from 100% organic vineyards, planted between 500 and 900 metres above sea level, just 85km from the Mediterranean sea. The DO is surrounding by several mountain ranges, which provide a mineral rich terroir, ranging over various altitudes, the soils of which originated from the Pliocene era, over 5 million years ago. This diversity of altitudes and soils creates a unique terroir to grow both indigenous and international cultivars.

Abuelico

Abuelico. Diminutive (ico) for ‘Abuelo’ (Spanish for Grandfather)

A 100% organic Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from vineyards located at 545 metres above altitude. A  mediterranean style of Sauvignon Blanc boasting exotic fruit notes of pineapple and citrus, and refreshing acidity.

A blend of 85% old vine Monastrell, a variety that is indigenous to DO Yecla, and 15% Syrah. The vineyards are planted on limestone slopes, located at 750 metres above sea level, which brings a combination of extradorinaiy freshness and fruit concentration to the wine. Packed with ripe red fruits, black plum and a touch of spice and pepper. Delicious and quintessentially Spanish.

This Syrah is sourced from 15 year-old vineyards located on silty and sandy soils. The delicate use of oak brings complexity whilst retaining amazing fruit characters. Intense notes of violets and blackberry and spicy notes of liquorice
