1659 Reserve Merlot 2015

Boutinot South Africa

1659 is a celebration of the first vintage of South Africa which was authorised in that year by the founder of Cape Town, Jan Van Riebeeck. Minimal and restrained in presentation, the wines certainly over-deliver when tasted – pure fruit expression, texture and presence. They are great value for money, consistent and reliable. All grapes are hand harvested and most of the vines are trained using the Perold system, or are bush vines.

Meet the producer

Boutinot South Africa is driven by our passion for discovery and desire to capture the real essence of South Africa in...

These grapes are from Malmesbury shale soil, and they never have chance to rest; always pushing their roots further down to find water. Bunches are destemmed and placed in open-top fermenters.Turbo pigeage is done 4 times daily; this is a soft, delicate way of wetting the cap and aerating the wine. Malolactic fermentation follows and then the wine is kept on fine lees until bottling.

Tasting notes

A medium-bodied red, packed with plummy sweet fruit. Perfectly balanced and structured with excellent fruit flavours right to the finish.
